In January 2022, the Executive Committee of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) elected its new members. Among them was Dr. N. Beekarry, Director General of the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) of Mauritius, formerly known as the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Dr. Beekarry’s election to the Executive Committee highlights FCC’s active role in the global fight against corruption. Additionally, the FCC is a member of the IAACA Training Committee, established in 2017 to oversee and evaluate training activities for IAACA members.
The Director General and an FCC investigator attended the 8th ICAC Hong Kong Symposium, held from 22 to 24 May 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event, co-organized by the ICAC and IAACA, celebrated ICAC’s 50th anniversary and served as the Annual Conference of IAACA. The symposium, themed “Charting a New Path to Combat Corruption,” provided a platform for anti-corruption specialists and related professionals to discuss the latest challenges, initiatives, and strategies in anti-corruption work. It aimed to foster global collaboration among practitioners in the field.
During the symposium, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the FCC and ICAC Hong Kong. The MOU’s objectives are to promote and facilitate cooperation in preventing and combating corruption, including foreign bribery, fraud, and money laundering. This agreement underscores the commitment of both organizations to collaborate on tackling corruption and its consequences.
On 24 May 2024, the 7th IAACA Executive Committee (ExCo) Meeting was held in conjunction with the 8th ICAC Symposium and the 11th Annual Conference of IAACA. This meeting provided an opportunity for executive committee members to discuss and align their strategies in the fight against corruption.
Two workshops were conducted on 25 May 2024, focusing on enforcement and prevention:
Workshop on Enforcement: Titled “Fighting an Invisible Crime: Enforcement through Innovation and Technology,” this workshop explored innovative approaches and technological advancements in enforcing anti-corruption laws.
Workshop on Prevention & Education: Under the theme “Harnessing ICT to Enhance Governance and Internal Controls,” this workshop examined how information and communication technology can improve governance and strengthen internal controls to prevent corruption.
The FCC’s active participation in the symposium, MOU signing, and workshops demonstrates its ongoing commitment to enhancing its capabilities and fostering international collaboration in the fight against corruption.
