The Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) organised a half-day workshop titled “The Role of the Media in the Fight Against Financial Crimes” on Thursday, 17 April 2025, at the FCC Headquarters.
The event was organised by the Education and Preventive Division as part of its mandate under the FCC Act 2023 to raise awareness and foster collaboration. The workshop brought together 22 representatives from the media.
Mr. T. Dawoodarry, Acting Director-General, discussed the different stages involved in a financial crimes investigation, from receipt of complaint up to prosecution and confiscation. He emphasised the FCC’s dedication to conducting thorough and impartial investigations. the Acting Director-General further underlined the role of the media as a prime partner in fostering transparency and building public trust. He looks forward to reinforced collaboration with the media, while also stressing the importance of protecting the integrity of ongoing investigations, particularly regarding confidentiality of witnesses.
FCC Commissioner Mr. R. Rault emphasised the FCC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and highlighted the crucial role of the media in reporting financial crimes responsibly. While acknowledging the media’s contribution to promoting transparency, he cautioned against the premature disclosure of sensitive information that could compromise ongoing investigations or amount to trial by media. As such, he urged the media to exercise greater discernment in their reporting to better support national development. He also referenced Mauritius’ declining position in the Corruption Perceptions Index and called for collective action in the fight.
Mr. I. Rossaye, Acting Chief Communication and Public Relations Officer, provided an overview of the FCC’s legislative and institutional framework. He outlined key provisions of the FCC Act 2023, including the introduction of new offences, mandatory compliance mechanisms, and sanctions, as well as the establishment of a witness protection scheme. He also elaborated on the role of the Operations Review Committee and the Commission’s expanded mandate in both investigative and preventive functions.

During the interactive session, participants had the opportunity to share perspectives and suggestions for improving communication strategies and reinforce collaboration. Suggestions include more timely updates from the FCC via digital platforms, exploring use of channels like TikTok to engage younger audiences, and improving coordination during high-profile operations.
The workshop was concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the FCC to responsible communication and continued media collaboration in support of national efforts against financial crimes.
